Whilst most people are just getting over Christmas and thinking of booking Log cabins and fishing breaks, we have been hard at work at Spring Heath.

As a small business, we need to have a site maintenance and improvement plan for the calendar year, to ensure that when we open the cabins, and hot tubs sparkle and are free of cobwebs and dust!
We also work on the fishery to ensure that the habit and fish are in tip top condition, ready for your visit.
We thought that we would give you an insight to some of our work in preparing our rural retreats.
Around the fishing pools
Tree Cutting
Between November and the end of February each year, we spend time cutting back the poolside trees.
We do this for several reasons: to let in sunlight, which turbo charges aquatic growth within the water. We also wish to create bankside space and light to allow marginal plants to grow in the edge of the pools.
Opening the surface of the pools by cutting back trees and foliage creates “wind lanes” which help with oxygenation and circulation of the water.

Water Quality
We always check the water parameters of the pools through out the year to ensure that we offer the best environment for our fish & wildlife.
As part of our plan to optimise water quality, we apply 3 tonnes of chalk powder to the pools.
The chalk increases the PH of the water (important as our water is slightly acidic) whilst also taking microscope oxygen particles to the bottom of the pool. The oxygen and chalk particles help the invertebrates (pond bugs) thrive, which in turn leads to them eating the leaf matter (silt) which in turn reduces the silt in the pools.

Netting
Every couple of years we net the pools to help give us an idea of our stock volumes and health.
We use an specialist contractor to catch the fish and allow us to ensure we have the right fish in the correct pools I.E Coarse fish in Ecclestone Pool & larger carp in Blurton Pool
The dogs usually get in on the action at our Pet friendly lodges

As you can see, we have revamped our website and we update our drone footage in the spring! (Add link to You Tube video)
